| Why are you running for the Brevard County School Board? |
| |
After being an employee of the Brevard School Board since 1971, I believe I have the experience and knowledge to understand the important decisions which need to be made in order to provide the finest education for our students. As a result of having served in many roles during the past 37 years, I believe I have the insight necessary to be able to understand all aspects of what it takes to have a great school system. Besides my leadership as an educator I also am the parent of two children who are products of the Brevard School System and have served on School Advisory Committees in my role as a parent. I have a passion for helping young people and I believe I can provide the necessary positive direction for our students. |

| What do you believe are the main issues facing our school board? |
| |
First and foremost, the number one priority has to always be for the kids. Everything we do must insure that our students are well taken care of and are provided with instruction which is age appropriate and challenging. The next issue that will be very important is how we are going to fund all that is needed. Unfortunately, with decreased state revenue, every school board will be faced with some very difficult decisions in regards to what needs to be funded and what can be put aside till a later date. We already have had to cut millions and more cuts are probable. Another issue that will be very important has to do with the redistricting of the school boundaries so we have equity in regards to the numbers of students in our schools. There are situations that exist in which we have some schools that are overcrowded and others that are not at capacity. By state law, before new schools are built, we need to address how we can balance the numbers in each of these cases. Another issue that we will be facing has to do with increasing the rigor in our curriculum so our students will be best prepared to be successful in a global society. Whatever issue will be presented I am prepared to be open minded and listen to my constituents prior to making any decision. |

What do you think it takes to be a successful school board member? |
| |
I believe there are many attributes that are necessary to be a successful board member. The first attribute is to be knowledgeable about the issues related to education and our schools. The next is to have good people skills and know what it takes to get along with your fellow board members and more importantly to be responsive to the people you serve. A third attribute would be to take the time to visit with students, teachers, administrators, and parents so you have the pulse for what is taking place on the school sites and the desires of all of the vested partners. |
